Feb 20 2006 Spent all day fortifying one of my apartment buildings. I seem to be spending more time and money thwarting the activities of two bit crack heads lately. The building that Chris and Amanda broke into was the center of my attention today. The building has the typical aluminum and glass front entrance. There was a tamper guard over the electric door strike adjacent to the lock. What criminals do is with a heavy duty screw driver they spread the door and the door frame apart just above or below the door strike guard. Then the door is easily opened. Identedy theft artists then pop all the mailbox locks and steal all the mail. Coin thieves try to break into laundry rooms and laundry coin boxes. Vagrants try to break into storage, electrical or mechanical rooms to live in. For $120 I bought a special two piece aluminum angle and channel system that runs the full length of the door jamb preventing screwdrivering the opening area. I installed smaller door guards over the deadbolts on the mechanical, electrical and storage room doors. I also had to repair a light fixture hanging by its wires from the ceiling, a leaky hot water tap, a loose stair nosing and a stair corner trim. Small stuff but necessary upkeep! Hey...its a living!
